Shirley is a soft red winter wheat variety developed by Virginia Tech and exclusively licensed to Crop Production Services. Shirley is a broadly adapted, high yielding, short stature, full season cultivar having very good milling and pastry baking quality. Spikes and straw are white to creamy in color at maturity, and the awnletted spikes are tapering in shape. The variety is resistant to powdery mildew, and it has also expressed a high level of resistance to leaf and stem rust. It is susceptible to stripe rust. Shirley is resistant to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus, Wheat Spindle Streak Mosaic Virus, Septoria tritici leaf blotch, and Hessian fly. It has moderate resistance to Fusarium head blight. The flag leaf is erect and twisted.
